Massachusetts drivers will soon join motorists in five other states who can help fight terrorism while also displaying their patriotism with a specialty “United We Stand” license plate. The Massachusetts “United We Stand” license plate was recently signed into law and acting Gov. Jane Swift was to hold a ceremonial bill signing to introduce the legislation this afternoon at the State House. Portions of the proceeds from the license plate go directly to America’s anti-terrorism efforts.
As with “United We Stand” plates in five other states, including Connecticut and New Jersey, the Rewards for Justice Fund will make 100 percent of the Massachusetts license plate money it collects available to the U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program.
In less than a year, the Rewards for Justice “United We Stand” license plate program has become the most successful national campaign in history. It is expected to generate tens of millions of dollars in the coming years. The Fund has set a goal of raising $100 million over the next five years.
Funds from the Massachusetts “United We Stand” license plate will also benefit families of the 9/11 attacks and the state’s fire, police and emergency workers.
The Rewards for Justice Fund, created after the brutal terrorist attacks on the US, allows citizens to contribute to the 18-year old State Department program, which has been credited for saving thousands of lives by paying reward money to entice informants to reveal terrorist plans and hiding places.
State Representative Joseph Sullivan, of Braintree, was the lead sponsor of the “United We Stand” legislation. The “United We Stand” license plate is the best way for drivers to actually prevent future terrorist attacks.
“With the purchase of this patriotic plate, every Massachusetts motorist will be able to ensure their dollars will actually be used to apprehend terrorists around the globe and to honor the heroes of our country who were victims on that fateful day.”
The “United We Stand” license plate program offers U.S. citizens an easy, visible way to show their patriotism and fight terrorism, according to Scott Case, the co-founder of the Rewards for Justice Fund. Massachusetts today became the 6th state to participate in the national “United We Stand” license plate program, which is expected to raise tens of millions of dollars in the coming years.
“People remain angry, sad and confused about the horrific acts of last September, but more than anything they are proud, patriotic and willing to do their part,’’ Case said. “We are thrilled that Massachusetts drivers will be the latest to help combat terrorism with the United We Stand license plate. Their patriotism and civic pride will be a huge boost to the Rewards for Justice Program.”
A $40 fee will be charged, in addition to other license plate registration fees in order to purchase the license plates. Those interested in obtaining the “United We Stand” plate can sign up at www.rewardsfund.us.
The Rewards for Justice Fund is a non-profit, charitable organization created by Internet and marketing entrepreneurs Scott Case and Joe Rutledge in the days following the September 11 attacks. The Fund has been authorized by the U.S. State Department to provide donations collected from members of the public who want to personally contribute to America’s war against terrorism.
Funds generated from the sale of the new “United We Stand” plate will be used by the State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program. To date, the program has paid out almost $10 million for information leading to the capture of several terrorists and has been credited for saving thousands of lives around the world. Among those who have been apprehended under this program is Ramzi Yousef, who was convicted for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. When apprehended, he was planning a series of airline bombings.
Dollars provided by citizens via either direct donations or the purchase of United We Stand license plates supplement the federal dollars on which the program relies. “United We Stand” license plates benefiting the Rewards for Justice Fund have been authorized in New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, and South Carolina. There is pending legislation to create “United We Stand” license plates in several other states.
