WASHINGTON, D.C., -The new State Department anti-terrorism Internet campaign, launched today in tandem with the Department’s landmark public service advertising campaign, has a distinctly digital-age look and feel, thanks to inspiration that came from two leaders and visionaries of the new economy.
Lending their Internet and marketing expertise to a State Department campaign undertaken by Under Secretary of State Charlotte Beers, herself one of America’s most creative and accomplished advertising executives, were Scott Case and Joe Rutledge.
The two Connecticut business executives turned their anger and frustration over the Sept. 11 attacks into the Rewards for Justice Fund (www.RewardsFund.us), an innovative new web-based program that allows individual Americans to contribute directly to U.S. anti-terrorism activities. The Fund raises money from individuals who want to help support the State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program, a highly effective anti-terrorist initiative that uses reward payments to entice individuals with knowledge of terrorist plans or locations to reveal what they know.
Case, one of the founders of Priceline.com, and Rutledge, a former TV and marketing executive who served as chief marketing officer for Priceline’s largest affiliate business, worked closely with a team assembled by Beers and redesigned the official Web site of the State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program (www.RewardsForJustice.net). The result is a user-friendly and interactive site that provides citizens with a wealth of information on how to recognize and report information that might be useful in America’s fight against terrorism.
Case and Rutledge also advised the State Department to establish, for the first time, one central toll-free telephone number (1-800-USREWARDS) that Americans can call to provide information on possibleterrorist activities, and contributed to the design of the call center’s operations.
The two also created and launched the Reward for Justice Fund’s website, www.RewardsFund.us, for individuals who want to contribute funds that will be provided, in full, to the State Department’s Rewards program. In support of the Fund, the two have created compelling television and print ads that complement the State Department’s recently-launched public service campaign by inviting Americans to support the Fund.
“Millions of Americans have been looking for ways to help in the fight against terrorism,” Case said.“The modern look and feel of the site, backed by the exceptional public service ad campaign launched by Under Secretary Beers, should provide exactly the opportunity Americans have been looking for.”
“Americans have learned all too well that terrorists and their sympathizers lurk not just overseas but in our own cities and our towns,” Rutledge said. “We’re pleased we could devote our Internet and marketing expertise to help the State Department communicate on-line with the millions of Americans who benefit each day from their extraordinary efforts in the fight against terrorism.”
Beginning this week, the State Department will launch an unprecedented national public service campaign that allows citizens who have information on possible terrorist activity to log onto a new web site (www.RewardsForJustice.net) or call toll-free 1-800-USREWARDS (1-800-877-3927), and share that information anonymously with U.S. government anti-terrorism agents.
Furthermore, other Americans -- who do not have vital information but still want to help -- will be able to contribute to the U.S. war against terrorism by donating money to the Rewards for Justice Fund (www.RewardsFund.us). The Fund, established in the days following the Sept. 11 attacks, raises money from individual citizens. One-hundred percent of the dollars the Fund raises from individuals is turned over to the State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program.
About the U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program
Since its introduction in 1984, the Rewards for Justice Program has used reward payments to stop acts of terror and bring terrorists to justice, saving thousands of lives in the U.S. and abroad. The Program played a key role in the apprehension of Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, who is now behind bars for his participation in the 1993 bombing of the World TradeCenter. Additionally, the Rewards for Justice Program has thwarted several airline hijackings.
About the Rewards for Justice Fund
The Rewards for Justice Fund was established by Internet and marketing entrepreneurs Scott Case and Joe Rutledge. Since conceiving the idea shortly after the September 11 attacks, they have obtained government authorization to allow U.S. citizens to contribute to the fund, and have enlisted vigorous support from a wide range of leading policy makers with jurisdiction over terrorist-related issues.
