TALLAHASSEE, Fla., – The Florida Legislature accelerated their state’s drive against terrorism today by speeding into enactment legislation authorizing a new “United We Stand” Florida license plate, the proceeds from which will help fund one of the U.S. government’s most effective anti-terrorist programs.
The measure was enthusiastically supported by both chambers of the Florida Legislature, passing in both the Florida House and Senate by substantial margins.
Revenues generated from sales of the new license plate will go to the Rewards for Justice Fund (www.RewardsFund.us). The Fund is a new, non-profit organization that was created in the days following the brutal attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to raise money from individual Americans for use by the U.S. State Department's Rewards for Justice Program. The federal program is a highly successful effort that uses reward payments to identify and apprehend individuals who are planning, or have committed, terrorist acts.Since its establishment in 1984, the Rewards for Justice Program has played a key role in the apprehension of dozens of terrorists around the world, including Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, who is now behind bars for his role in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.
Florida’s newFlorida’s new “United We Stand” plate is the first in the nation that allocates money to an anti-terrorism program. The bill authorizing the new plate now goes to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for his signature.
It will be several weeks before the “United We Stand” plates are produced and made available to Florida motorists. However, effective today, Florida motorists can log onto www.RewardsFund.us and ask to be notified when they will be able to register for the new plates.
In addition to registering for a new “United We Stand” license plate, Florida residents, like all Americans, can also make a contribution directly to the Rewards for Justice Fund by logging onto www.RewardsFund.us, or by calling toll-free 1-877-392-7373 and making a donation with their credit card.
“Floridians want the opportunity to not only help those who have suffered, but also to contribute directly to the effort underway to stop terrorism,” said state Senator Buddy Dyer (D-Orlando), who sponsored the amendment that authorized the proceeds of the “United We Stand” license plate to go to the Rewards for Justice Fund.“Purchasing a ‘United We Stand’ license plate will allow Floridians to show their patriotism and also contribute to a program that has a proven track record in helping to capture terrorists and prevent future attacks.”
“Florida motorists will now have a tremendous opportunity to show the rest of the country and the world how united they are in supporting the war against terrorism,” said Scott Case, co-founder of the Rewards for Justice Fund. “The ‘United We Stand’ license plate makes a bold statement about the values that bind this country and, at the same time, will help fund one of the most effective means of turning terrorist supporters and sympathizers into informants.”
“One of the most powerful weapons in the war against terrorism is the American dollar," said Joe Rutledge, who co-founded the Fund with Case. "Florida’s new license plate will allow every Floridian to use that weapon to help bring terrorists to justice before they strike again."
